Pope Leo XIV plans to offer the Vatican as a venue for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. About this writes Politico with reference to Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See's chief diplomat.
The Vatican has called it "tragic" that Russian President Vladimir Putin ignored a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Turkey.
"This is all tragic because we were hoping that it would be, perhaps, a slow process, but with a peaceful resolution of the conflict, and instead we are back at the beginning. Now we will see what to do, but the situation is complicated," Parolin said.
According to him, the newly elected Pope is considering the possibility of providing the Vatican for negotiations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
"The Pope plans to make the Vatican, the Holy See, available for a direct meeting between the two sides," — noted the chief diplomat of the Holy See.
