Odesa customs officers helped colleagues from Kazakhstan find drugs

Interacting with the Office for Combating Narcotics Crime in the Odesa Region of the Department for Combating Narcotics Crime of the National Police of Ukraine, employees of the Office for Combating Drug and Weapons Smuggling of the Odesa Customs during an analysis of the general flow of international mails drew attention to a parcel with children's items and food. It was headed from Odessa to Almaty to the address of a citizen of Kazakhstan.

Based on the results of analytical and search measures, Odessa customs officers sent information to their colleagues from Kazakhstan about the possible movement of narcotics in this parcel under the guise of baby food, toys, food supplements, etc.

The message was sent through the secure international communication channel of the World Customs Organization "CenComm".

After the international postal shipment arrived at its destination, Almaty customs officials conducted a thorough customs inspection of the risky parcel.

The suspicions of the Odessa customs officers came true: their Kazakh colleagues found 200 tablets of various colors, shapes and markings, including "red bull", "69", "TESLA", "duplo", "NASA", as well as a package with white powder "Coconut, 5 g".

The narcotic substances were found in oat-wheat porridge in a hermetically sealed polyethylene package of baby food, which looked similar to factory packaging.

A TruNarc portable drug analyzer identified the white powder as cocaine hydrochloride and the pills as MDMA, a synthetic drug known as ecstasy.

The successful implementation was the result of the cooperation of the Odesa customs officials with the Department of Combating Narcotics Crime in the Odesa Region of the Department of Combating Narcotics Crime of the National Police of Ukraine and the State Revenue Department of the city of Almaty within the framework of cooperation provided for by the Global Control Program for International Container Transportation.

Ukraine joined the program implemented by the World Customs Organization and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in January 2018. It was then that a port control unit was created in Odesa Customs, analogues of which operate in 52 countries around the world.

The detected drugs are a vivid example of the effectiveness of international customs cooperation, cooperation with law enforcement agencies and the systematic work of Odessa customs officials in the fight against drug smuggling.

Ukrainian and Kazakh customs officers have done their job. Then it's up to the law enforcement officers.
