The ceasefire in Ukraine should "make it possible to conclude a real peace treaty." Otherwise, Russia will face new sanctions. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa, writes Stern.de and The Guardian.
Commenting on Russia's war against Ukraine, Merz stressed that "we firmly and unconditionally stand on the side of Ukraine" and that the EU seeks to "end this war as soon as possible," but at the same time it is clear that "this will not pass by Ukraine's head."
He stressed that “Ukrainians must participate” in any discussions, and promised that the EU would continue to “support Ukraine in its ability to effectively defend itself.”
The German Chancellor spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump on Thursday and assured Trump of support for his idea of a 30-day ceasefire.
"In particular, it's about Russia now," Merz warned.
He noted that such a ceasefire should "make it possible to conclude a real peace agreement."
"If this does not happen, we will not hesitate to further increase sanctions pressure together with our European partners and the United States of America," — the Chancellor emphasized.
