Germany plans to strengthen security in Greenland and the Arctic within NATO — Pistorius

Germany has announced its participation in strengthening the security of Greenland and the Arctic within NATO, emphasizing that the region requires comprehensive protection and attention from allies. This was stated by Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during a joint press conference with EU High Representative Kaia Kallas on Tuesday in Berlin.

The Minister of Defense emphasized that only possible measures are currently being discussed, specific decisions have not yet been made.

"Regarding the possibility of launching a mission in Greenland: we are discussing and studying with several NATO partners what measures are appropriate and what is needed," — Pistorius said.

He emphasized that Greenland is not an ordinary region due to its vast territory and low population density, so a military presence alone is not able to provide comprehensive protection.

"It's about surveillance, patrolling, monitoring what's happening underwater, above the water and in the air, as well as reconnaissance and regular exercises on the ground to show that we're there," said the minister.

Boris Pistorius noted that the security of Greenland and the Arctic is not exclusively an American interest, but a matter for NATO and Europe as a whole.

He also emphasized the hegemonic ambitions of Russia, which is actively remilitarizing the Arctic, and called on allies to jointly protect the northern routes and maritime security.

"More than a year ago, we entered into a maritime security partnership with Norway, Denmark and Canada. This is a recognition that the security of the North Atlantic, including the Arctic and Greenland, is of key importance. Together with our NATO allies and littoral states, we share a responsibility for this region," — emphasized Pistorius.

Separately, the Minister of Defense recalled that Greenland belongs to Denmark, which is a NATO ally, so all security measures must be coordinated with the Danish side.

The issue of strengthening the security of Greenland and the Arctic is under active discussion among NATO countries due to the fact that the United States has become interested in the island as a military platform for surveillance and security of the region.
