Netanyahu confirms signing of Israel-Hamas deal

Israel

It could be approved on Saturday

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed that Israeli and Hamas negotiators in Doha have signed an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages. However, the first hostages may be released a day later. This was reported by The Times of Israel.

A statement from Netanyahu's office said the prime minister had called a security cabinet meeting for Friday, January 17, to vote on the deal.

However, Netanyahu's spokesman noted that the full cabinet meeting will not take place until the evening of Saturday, January 18. This is because opponents of the deal must have 24 hours to file a petition with the Supreme Court, and a meeting on Friday afternoon will not give them enough time to do so, as many of them are religious and observe the Sabbath.

"While the security cabinet awaits the return of the Israeli negotiating team from Doha to hold a meeting, it is unclear why both the security cabinet and the full cabinet cannot be convened before sunset on Friday," the message says.

As of Al Arabiya edition According to sources familiar with the text of the agreement, Hamas and Israel have signed a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip after final amendments were made.

According to sources, both parties signed the document after “making final edits” to the document. Details of the agreement have not been made public at this time.

Interlocutors reported that the Israeli delegation left Doha after overcoming differences over the agreement. Representatives from Jerusalem noted that "the agreement would have almost collapsed if not for the intervention of the mediators."

The sources also add that some changes have been made to the agreement regarding the release of the hostages. In particular, in the second phase of the agreement's implementation, the IDF is to reduce the number of raids into Gaza, starting Friday evening.

Negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages have been ongoing since May 2024. They were based on a three-point plan by US President Joe Biden. The negotiations were mediated by Qatar and Egypt.

Over the past year, negotiations have been slow and almost fruitless.
