In Latvia, not far from the Adaža military base, a large-scale NATO exercise was held, demonstrating advanced technologies, including robotic systems controlled by the 5G network from various points in Europe. This is reported by The Times.
During these tests, called "Digital Highway", a robotic device capable of autonomously scanning the battlefield in search of the enemy was presented. It was run by the Spanish military who were 2000 miles away from the training site, made possible by 5G networks. NATO's goal is to be technologically ahead of possible adversaries, including Russia, and to increase the interaction of the forces of different countries.
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds noted that NATO seeks to coordinate the work of various systems, including ground operations and unmanned aerial vehicles, which is especially important in light of modern threats.
Representatives of Estonia also took part in the exercises. The Prime Minister of the country, Kristen Michal, said that the future of modern warfare is being shaped in Ukraine, and in order to counter Russia, it is necessary to maintain a technological advantage. He emphasized that NATO should set ambitious goals, and previous measures to strengthen defense were insufficient.
Also presented was the development of the Latvian company Origin Robotics — an unmanned Beak high-precision weapon system, nicknamed the "flying Javelin." This drone returns to base after completing a mission, making it more cost-effective compared to traditional strike vehicles.
During the exercises, unmanned systems were used to evacuate wounded soldiers and patrol the coast. At the same time, NATO faces challenges in the political sphere: the possible return of Donald Trump to the White House raises fears among European allies due to his criticism of aid to Ukraine and threats to leave the alliance if European countries do not increase defense spending.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina noted that Europe is looking forward to the results of the US elections, as the uncertainty creates an unstable situation in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.
