Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that peace in Ukraine should not be expected in the near future. He emphasized that only new sanctions can affect Russia. This is reported by Rai News.
Tajani stated that the prospects for peace in Ukraine remain distant, and the only effective tool for pressure on Russia at the moment may be new financial sanctions.
Italy's foreign minister said he did not expect any concrete progress in resolving the war before Christmas. The official noted that US President Donald Trump had been counting on a constructive stance from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, but his response was "negative."
"The only real tool today is sanctions that would deprive Russia of the ability to finance its army through access to resources," — emphasized the head of Italian diplomacy.
Tajani also called the Kremlin's latest threats "futile" after Putin said he would consider European troops a "legitimate target" if they were introduced into the territory of Ukraine.
The minister confirmed that Italy will not join the "coalition of the determined" on the issue of sending soldiers to Ukrainian territory.
"Instead, we propose another way - concluding an agreement by analogy with Article 5 of NATO... This is a rational proposal that Putin cannot consider a provocation, but which will ensure the independence and security of Ukraine," explained Tajani.
