German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Ukraine needs a peace plan. European leaders promised to increase support for Kyiv and pressure on Moscow. About this writes DW.
It is noted that Merz made this statement after a group telephone conversation with other European leaders Volodymyr Zelensky, following the meeting of the Ukrainian President with US President Donald Trump.
"During the conversation, European leaders, including Merz, promised to strengthen support for Ukraine in order to 'encourage Russia to engage in serious negotiations,'" — said the official spokesman for the German government, Stefan Cornelius.
In particular, it is planned to increase pressure on Moscow through sanctions and use frozen Russian state assets.
"Zelensky has the full support of Germany and our European friends on the path to peace," — Cornelius quotes Merz.
It is noted that after the meeting with Trump, the leaders of European states discussed further actions with Zelensky and intend to continue to closely monitor the next steps.
