Maloney was unhappy with EU leaders' talks — Politico

Italy

The Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni was dissatisfied with the negotiations of the leaders of the European Union regarding the appointment of the new EU leadership, the publication writes Politico.

In particular, the Italian Prime Minister "challenged the type of approach" used during the discussion, said an official familiar with the progress of the negotiations.

She started "from the statement that today's informal meeting should have been a moment to discuss what to do in the light of the signals from the European elections, and then, from that point of departure, start a discussion about names for higher positions, and not the other way around." - added the official.

Among the EU leaders present at the meeting, Maloney was one of the few whose political force won an undisputed victory in the European Parliament elections in June.

According to one diplomat, some leaders tried to "take Maloney out of the game" instead of fully engaging her.

Italian officials had hoped before the talks that Maloney would use the summit to defend Italy's interests. In particular, they expected Maloney's success in the election to help her win support for her favorite issues, such as migration.

At the same time, Maloney's support was necessary for Ursula von der Leyen to get the leaders' consent for a second term as head of the European Commission.
