US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that during the talks in Saudi Arabia, the US wanted to find out how serious the Russians were about ending the war in Ukraine and achieving peace. This is what is being said Rubio interview, which he gave to journalist Catherine Herridge.
Marco Rubio said the US should maintain relations with Russia, whether it likes everything the aggressor country does or not. Washington should also be able to check and see if the Russians are serious about ending this war.
At the same time, according to the US Secretary of State, the meeting in Riyadh did not discuss any details regarding a potential peace agreement.
"The flow of this conversation was this: first, we need to streamline the work of our diplomatic missions at some level, because we need to be able to communicate with them, given the nature of our two countries and the importance that we have in the world. Second, there are things that we could potentially cooperate on geopolitically," – explained Rubio.
According to him, the US and Russia may have certain common interests – particularly regarding the Iranian regime, which has nuclear weapons.
Catherine Herridge asked Marco Rubio if the Russians were interested in ending this war. The US Secretary of State replied: "We're going to find out."
"So, ultimately, they are either interested or they are not. If the demands they are making to end the war are maximalist and unrealistic, then I think we have an answer. On the other hand, if there is any possibility of achieving peace, we should do it." – the politician concluded.
According to him, everything will depend on how the Russians act next, and the only thing the US and Russia agreed on during the meeting is that they will talk about peace.
"We did not discuss any specific issues regarding the territories, none, because that was not the purpose of this meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to determine whether there is real interest in discussing peace or not. If there is, then this is a process that can be started," Rubio said.
The US Secretary of State also called it "unwise" to say that Ukraine or Europe will be "cut out" of the negotiations, since it is impossible to stop the war when the views of all sides are not represented.
