The Kremlin is not interested in participating in real peace negotiations to end the war against Ukraine.
This is how German Chancellor Friedrich Merz commented on the recent meeting between German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, reports NTVIt is noted that the Chancellor views the outcome of this meeting as evidence of Moscow's unwillingness to participate in serious peace negotiations.
"Russia's subsequent assessment of this meeting showed that it is clearly not interested in serious negotiations at this time. Therefore, we will make every effort to continue to assist and support Ukraine," – said Merz.
He clarified that this is about assistance "not only military, but also political and financial."
As a reminder, on September 26, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The talks lasted about 20 minutes.
The parties discussed the situation in Ukraine and the prospects for the negotiation process. Vadeful called on Moscow to "abandon the dangerous path of escalation against Germany, Europe and NATO."
This was the first meeting of the heads of diplomatic departments of Germany and Russia at this level since the start of the Russian Federation's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, the meeting was initiated by Germany.
