North Korea has fired about 60 artillery shells into the waters near South Korea's Ephendo group of islands. It is reported Yonhap News Agency with reference to the statement of the South Korean military.
All the shells fell in the maritime buffer zone, which was established to prevent maritime trade conflicts under the inter-Korean military agreement signed in 2018. Shelling the zone violates the terms of the agreement.
South Korea called on North Korea to immediately stop the shelling because "this is an act that threatens peace on the Korean Peninsula and increases tensions."
North Korea is said to have fired about 200 artillery shells near South Korea's two western border islands of Yongpyeong and Pengnyeon on Friday. Because of this, the authorities were forced to evacuate local residents, and the South Korean military began its own live-fire exercises in response.
