British Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised US President Donald Trump's efforts to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, expressing hope that the situation is moving closer to a ceasefire. He said this in an interview Bloomberg.
"President Trump wants to end the conflict. I have no doubt about that. We are getting closer, I hope, to some kind of ceasefire, some kind of agreement. President Zelensky has made it absolutely clear that he wants an unconditional ceasefire. Putin, I think, is stalling, so I think it is important for us, along with others, to say that there will be consequences if Russia does not agree to an unconditional ceasefire," he noted.
He also expressed confidence that the US president will impose sanctions against the Russian Federation, as he has repeatedly stated.
“The path to peace is rarely straight, but I believe that this is what President Trump wants. This is what the Ukrainians want. This is a war being waged against them by the aggressor, which is Russia, and that is why we are doing everything we can to achieve this outcome,” — he emphasized, adding that it must be a "lasting peace."
At the same time, answering the question of whether the United Kingdom is ready to send troops to Ukraine as part of a coalition of the willing, he noted that the key condition would be air cover from the United States.
"I have always said that protection from the United States is necessary," Starmer said.
At the same time, he noted that there is no reason to believe that the US and the UK will not be able to act together.
“President Trump has made it clear that he will support us, and I have always made it clear that the United States must be involved in this. But on the other hand, I really believe that Europe must step up. And that is why we, together with President Macron, have led a coalition of the willing, which will move at the pace of those who want to move forward, not at the pace of those who are most cautious,” the British Prime Minister emphasized.
