The MEPs called on EU countries to lift restrictions on Ukraine's strikes on Russia, speed up the supply of weapons and put pressure on Hungary. About this write Interfax-Ukraine.
The resolution "Support of Ukraine by EU member states" was supported by 425 MEPs during the voting at the EP plenary session in Strasbourg on Thursday, September 19. 131 deputies voted against the resolution, 63 abstained.
"The European Parliament calls on member states to immediately lift restrictions on the use of Western weapons systems delivered to Ukraine against legitimate military targets on the territory of Russia, as this impedes Ukraine's ability to fully exercise its right to self-defense under international law and makes Ukraine vulnerable to attacks on its population and infrastructure", - it is stated in the text of the document.
The resolution also notes that the insufficient supply of military aid and restrictions on the use of transferred weapons "risk undermining the efforts made so far."
"In this regard, the EP reiterates its calls to member states to fulfill their commitment from March 2023 to supply one million projectiles to Ukraine, to accelerate the supply of weapons, in particular modern air defense systems and other weapons and ammunition, in response to clearly identified needs, including Taurus missiles," - MEPs emphasized.
The European Parliament also confirmed its position that all EU member states and NATO allies should "collectively and individually commit" to military support for Ukraine and allocate at least 0,25% of their GDP each year. At the same time, the resolution emphasizes that member states need to strengthen cooperation among themselves in the field of air defense in order to ensure adequate protection against threats to the airspace of the EU and NATO.
In addition, the European Parliament offers the EU member states:
- take "concrete steps" for the integration of Ukraine into EU policies and programs in the field of defense and cyber security in the process of joining the EU;
- to fulfill their obligations regarding the creation of military production on the territory of Ukraine;
- cooperate with the Ukrainian defense industry and promote its long-term integration into the defense technological and industrial base of the EU.
The EP also calls on EU institutions to speed up the adoption of the European Defense Industry Strategy to "ensure the timely availability and supply of defense products." This, in turn, will make it possible to provide timely military support to Ukraine.
In addition, the MEPs called on all member states to put pressure on Hungary to force it to end the blockade of the European Peace Fund, including the recently created Aid Fund for Ukraine.
