The European Union is approaching a "critical moment" after political upheavals in the US and Slovakia threatened EU and NATO support for Ukraine in the face of a Russian invasion. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielus Landsbergis, reports CNN.
US lawmakers on Saturday decided not to include a request for $6 billion in aid to Ukraine in an interim bill designed to avoid a government shutdown. Meanwhile, the populist party of former pro-Kremlin Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico won the country's parliamentary elections early Sunday. Fico advocated ending aid to Ukraine and blocking Kyiv's bid to join NATO.
"Many messages sent from Brussels, Washington or other places are able to sow doubts about the seriousness of our intentions," he said at the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Kyiv.
Landsbergis expressed hope "that today's meeting will be able to correct this and send a very clear, crystal clear signal that Europe will be with Ukraine until this victory."
The foreign ministers of France, Ireland and Romania also confirmed their support for Kyiv.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Catherine Colona, warned Russia not to count on the "fatigue" of the EU countries from their support for Ukraine.
Her Romanian counterpart, Luminica Odobescu, said the country would support Ukraine in grain exports and stressed the detrimental impact of the invasion on global food security.
And the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, Michel Martin, expressed hope that the EU government officials will find a "sustainable approach to supporting Ukraine in the long term."
