The Chairman of the European Council, Charles Michel, called on the United States to allocate 60 billion dollars to Ukraine. This is Michelle said during a speech in the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 6.
"And I want to appeal to the House of Representatives of the United States with a request to allocate the 60 billion dollars necessary to guarantee the financial stability of Ukraine." said Michel.
He emphasized that the decision of the European Council to provide 50 billion euros to Ukraine is "a message to all those who, like us, believe in democratic values and the values of freedom."
"This is also a message to our partners who are on our side to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. I would like to take this opportunity to join you in making a solemn appeal to the US House of Representatives to quickly allocate the $60 billion needed to ensure Ukraine's financial stability." Michel said.
Speaking about the European Peace Fund, Michel noted that it has been used many times, but now it is necessary to reform this mechanism.
"And based on the proposal that the High Representative put on the table, we decided to continue moving forward. It may be necessary to add more money to this mechanism." — said Michel.
He added that he believed there would be a need to move away from the reimbursement approach that was the basis of the mechanism to one that is more based on joint procurement — to better support European defense, on the one hand, but also to be more effective, faster in supporting Ukraine.
"Another important topic that we have discussed many times in the past, including in this room, is frozen assets. And here we made significant progress and asked our ministers to continue and finalize the work on this important topic," — said Michel.
In addition, Michel said he was shocked by calls for peace in Ukraine and the prospect of Crimea and Luhansk remaining under Russian control.
