Erdogan approved Sweden's membership in NATO

Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent the country's parliament for ratification the protocol on Sweden's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, the press service of the Turkish president reports.

"The protocol on Sweden's accession to NATO was signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on October 23, 2023 and submitted for consideration by the Grand National Assembly (Parliament. - Ed.) of Turkey," - it says in a short message.

Swedish media sources previously reported that Stockholm is optimistic about the NATO accession process and expects it to be completed within the next few weeks.

It will be recalled that in July at the Vilnius NATO summit, Turkey agreed to unblock the process of ratification of Sweden's accession to the Alliance in exchange for assistance in rapprochement with the European Union.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said he will submit the ratification of Sweden's NATO bid to parliament in October when the legislature reconvenes after the summer recess.
However, the ratification of the Swedish application was threatened after a series of Koran-burning events in Sweden, which angered many Muslim countries, including Turkey.

In addition, Ankara stated that Stockholm's membership in the Alliance depends on the sale of American F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.

In addition to Turkey, Hungary did not ratify Sweden's application either.
