Why Ukrainian refugees actually return home - research

Ukraine

Two thirds of Ukrainian refugees abroad want to return to Ukraine in the future. Most of those who have already returned plan to stay in their country, write analytical platform "Vox Ukraine".

According to the survey, 63% of those who left have already returned to Ukraine. 71% - to their hometown, a quarter - to other regions of the country. They did not plan to return to their country - 13%. Most of those who returned wanted to stay in Ukraine, only 7% intended to go abroad again.

Unmarried refugees, those who had parents in Ukraine, and those who worked remotely for Ukrainian companies returned home more often. 9 out of 10 returned refugees noted the impact of emotions on making a decision to return to Ukraine. For 62% of respondents, emotional factors were key.

The following factors influenced the return of refugees:

  • homesickness – 58%;
  • longing for the Motherland - 51%;
  • longing for family - 41%;
  • children's desire to return to Ukraine - 36%;
  • a feeling of loneliness ("nobody needs you abroad") - 36%;
  • desire for children to study in Ukraine - 26%;
  • the opportunity to be useful for Ukraine and participate in recovery - 27%;

At the same time, the decision of 84% of Ukrainians to return was also influenced by difficulties abroad - this became a key factor for every fifth respondent.

In particular, the lack of housing, difficulties with employment, a decrease in the level of well-being, worse medicine, learning a language, lack of friends were mentioned among the problems.

Residents of western regions are more likely to plan to stay. Those who planned to emigrate even before the war, as well as those whose level of well-being abroad increased, are less likely.

By the way, the Polish authorities are preparing for a possible new wave of refugees from Ukraine. "We cannot rule out that the Russian offensive will lead to the elimination of the front to the West and lead to the fact that millions more Ukrainians will appear in Poland, in particular mainly women and children." - said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Andrzej Schein.
