Britain successfully confiscated the assets of a Russian oligarch for the first time. Law enforcement officers confiscated more than 750 pounds (963 USD) from Russian oligarch Peter Aven. It is reported Bloomberg.
The estate manager of Russian businessman Petro Aven has agreed to forfeit nearly $1 million to end a nearly two-year investigation by British police into sanctions evasion.
Annabel Darlow, a spokeswoman for the National Crime Agency (NCA), said thousands of pounds in cash found at Avena's mansion outside London had been confiscated under proceeds of crime legislation.
"The NCA's first successful seizure of funds as part of an investigation into possible sanctions evasion is an important milestone that should spur further enforcement action," - said James Bolton-Jones, Senior Advocacy Adviser at Spotlight on Corruption.
The NCA accused Aven of being a "pro-Kremlin oligarch" who acquired his wealth in the final days of the Soviet regime, but his lawyers rejected the allegation.
According to the court ruling, the money held in bank accounts at HSBC Holdings Plc and Monzo Bank Ltd. was confiscated after Avena's wife and the administrator of his estate found that the funds "were either property subject to forfeiture or were intended for use in illegal actions".
Recall that that the Russian billionaire Petro Aven fell under the sanctions of the European Union on February 28, 2022. The EU authorities explained this decision by the fact that Aven has connections in Russian power circles. The billionaire himself says that he opposes the regime of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
