The US did not engage with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in preparation for a major prisoner exchange. This was announced by White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan during briefing
"No interaction directly with Vladimir Putin," — said Sullivan.
At the same time, he noted that the US interacted with Russian officials during the preparation for the exchange.
"In the course of this, there was active interaction with Russian officials. I'm not going to go into detail because these channels are sensitive and need to be protected for that very reason, because having these sensitive channels allows us to get the results we have today." said the adviser of the White House.
Also during a briefing at the White House, US President Joe Biden was asked if he would like to speak directly with Putin, given that prisoners are coming home as part of the deal.
"I don't need to talk to Putin." Biden replied.
