Russia poses a "chronic threat" to the United States, and the seriousness of the war in Ukraine is hard to overstate given its need for foreign aid to continue the fight. If the United States ends its support, Ukraine may lose out. This was stated by the Commander-in-Chief of the US European Command and Supreme Commander of the NATO Armed Forces in Europe, Christopher Cavoli, during hearing in the Senate Armed Forces Committee.
At the same time, Kavoli expressed the opinion that the provision of the necessary assistance, primarily artillery ammunition, is the key to Ukraine's victory in the war, which is increasingly taking on the characteristics of a competition between the industrial military complexes of the opponents.
In particular, speaking about Ukraine, he expressed "absolute" confidence that it can win the war if there is an adequate supply of ammunition, because the Ukrainians have "skill and determination."
The general believes that under the conditions of an adequate level of production, the party with greater determination will win — "and it will be Ukraine."
The issue of ammunition
"Over the last 26 months of the war, the United States and our partners have supplied Ukrainian colleagues with a huge amount of critical ammunition and equipment," — Cavoli stated.
At the same time, the general said that currently Ukraine continues to be almost completely dependent on the United States for the production and supply of 155 millimeter ammunition, in addition to some other key military technologies.
According to him, European production still does not meet the level of needs, despite its gradual growth and investments to accelerate it.
“Some European countries, such as Slovakia, were able to quickly repurpose their old factories to produce these munitions. However, it will be several months before the production of 155 mm projectiles in the EU reaches the level of the US. General Cavoli noted.
He emphasized that other European countries provided Ukraine with all or almost all of their weapons.
"The countries of Eastern Europe emptied their pockets for Ukraine. Some of them gave 100% of what they have in a certain category." Cavoli noted.
