Today, May 18, the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV was held at the Vatican to mark the beginning of his pontificate.
During his inaugural Mass, the new pontiff delivered a message of unity. Pope Leo XIV said he wanted to serve the faithful through two dimensions of the papacy: love and unity.
"I would like our first great desire to be the unity of the Church, a sign of unity and communion that will be the guarantee of a reconciled world," — he said.
In his final speech at the enthronement ceremony, Pope Leo XIV mentioned Ukraine and said that "negotiations for a just peace are expected."
Also during the ceremony, he received the symbols of the papacy - a woolen cape on his shoulders and the so-called "fisherman's ring."
It is worth noting that tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square in Rome during the inauguration. A number of world leaders were also present, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena.
