Scientists have created a cheap and safe type of batteries

A team of researchers led by Professor Kang Kisuk of the Institute of Basic Sciences (IBS) Center for Nanoparticle Research has announced a major breakthrough in the field of next-generation solid-state batteries.

Their new ones discovery helped to create a new battery based on a solid electrolyte based on chlorides, which has exceptional ionic conductivity.

Commercial batteries available today typically use liquid electrolytes, which pose a risk of fire and explosion. Therefore, the development of safe solid electrolytes is critical for the development of solid-state battery technology.

To make solid-state batteries practical for everyday use, it is necessary to develop materials with high ionic conductivity, stability and mechanical flexibility. Recent research has successfully led to the creation of solid electrolytes, but none of them have completely satisfied all the requirements.

A group of researchers at IBS looked at chloride-based solid electrolytes, which are known for their excellent ionic conductivity, stability and mechanical flexibility. However, the use of rare earth metals made chloride batteries expensive and inefficient. By studying the distribution of metal ions in chloride electrolytes, the researchers developed a strategy for creating solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity.

They successfully created a lithium metal chloride solid-state battery based on zirconium, which turned out to be much more affordable compared to options using rare earth metals. This study revealed the role of metal ion distribution in the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes and may contribute to the further commercialization of solid-state batteries, increasing their availability and safety for energy storage.
