Samsung to be fined due to nuclear exposure of workers

Samsung

South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission has approved an administrative fine of up to 10,5 million won (about $7900) against Samsung. About this reported the Bloomberg.

South Korean regulators have found that Samsung Electronics violated nuclear safety rules, exposing workers at a semiconductor plant.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission approved an administrative fine of up to 10,5 million won (approximately $7) following an investigation.

It said Samsung could face additional sanctions for other violations.

The incident occurred in May when two workers at Samsung's plant in the city of Giheung, about 40 km south of Seoul, were exposed to more than a year's worth of radiation while servicing equipment for analyzing silicon wafers. The injured were hospitalized.

The cause of the accident was a malfunction of the protective device, which was supposed to automatically turn off the radiation when the door of the equipment was opened. This was due to the negligence of Samsung's radiation safety team.

Samsung said it would cooperate with regulators and provide assistance to affected workers. She also promised to take measures to prevent similar cases in the future.
