Technological progress over the past two decades has undoubtedly made our lives noticeably easier and more convenient. The Internet has become nothing short of a revolution, mobile gadgets have left a big mark on technological history, and the productivity and usefulness of gadgets have improved everywhere.
With all that said, there are certain industries and aspects of technology that have not reached the heights many had hoped for. Editorial office of the portal XDA-Devlopers named 8 problems that technology could not solve in the last 20 years.
1. Battery life and durability
Despite all the advances we've seen in smartphones over the past decades – performance, displays, camera quality, new form factors – batteries have remained the only component that's just as prone to wear and tear and requiring replacement after a few years. And batteries with a week's service life remained promises.
2. Mobile data and Wi-Fi
Mobile Internet and Wi-Fi, as before, are not widespread. Not only in villages, but even in the largest cities of the world, there are a number of places where there is no 3G, 4G and 5G coverage, and only super-slow EDGE and 2G are working, or there are no connections at all.
Whether it's network congestion, hardware issues, or ISP issues, we still encounter difficulties accessing the Internet at least a few times a year.
3. Sending advertising
Ads haunt users everywhere: on YouTube, in Internet browsers, inside mobile applications, in the operating system and even on lock screens.
With Microsoft finding new ways to place ads in Windows, and game companies seriously exploring the possibility of placing ads directly in games, there is little that ad blocking tools can do.
4. If two people call each other at the same time
Surprisingly, in 2024, it is still impossible to establish a connection if users call each other at the same time. Both will receive the answer that the number is busy. Exactly the same as 20 years ago.
5. Overheating of equipment
As manufacturers try to squeeze more and more performance into essentially the same form factor, the issue of overheating iron remains. Whether budget devices or expensive flagships, nothing is immune from overheating. All because the cooling systems are essentially the same as before.
6. Crashes and blue screens of death
Probably, every PC user is familiar with the fact that applications or the entire OS freeze from time to time. You are either thrown to the desktop without any explanation, or greeted with a blue screen of death (BSOD) with a random error code, text that is not useful at all. This behavior of our computers has remained mostly unchanged since they became popular about 20 years ago.
PC hardware may have gotten more advanced, but it's not immune to the occasional fatal error.
7. Repairability of devices
Even today, with the exception of a few niche brands, you can't expect high repairability or modularity from your phone or laptop. And what can be repaired is often too expensive. In fact, repairing equipment has become even more difficult than 20 years ago.
8. Standard cables
And finally, the last problem on the list is that, just like 20 years ago, all equipment is connected to physical cables. The introduction of USB is certainly a positive thing, but it has also created a new mess of conflicting USB fast charging standards and data transfer speeds.
