OpenAI has announced a new significant milestone for its AI assistant ChatGPT: the number of weekly active users has exceeded 400 million. This is double the number in August 2024, when the figure was double the number in November 2023.
OpenAI COO Brad Lightcup wrote in X: "We feel very honored to serve 5% of the world's population every week."
Despite the emergence of a new competitor, DeepSeek, which has sparked discussions about changing leaders in the AI tools market, ChatGPT continues to maintain its leadership.
The company also plans to simplify the use of ChatGPT by removing the need to select a model for a response. In the near future, OpenAI will add updated GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 models to the chat and API, and GPT-5 will be available even to free users, which could stimulate even faster growth in the popularity of ChatGPT.
Lightcap also noted that over 2 million business users are already using ChatGPT at work, and API usage has grown fivefold since the launch of o3 mini. In addition, OpenAI plans to merge the GPT and o-series models into a single powerful model in the near future, which could significantly improve agent capabilities and user experience.
