A non-hormonal male contraceptive has successfully blocked sperm production and rendered men temporarily infertile for two years. It works by injecting a biodegradable hydrogel into the vas deferens, which blocks sperm from entering the seminal fluid.
The procedure takes only 10 minutes under local anesthesia, and after the end of the working period, the gel is able to decompose in the body, so it can become a means of safe and temporary contraception for men. About this told edition of The Guardian.
The contraceptive, called Adam, was developed by Contraline as a replacement for traditional condoms and a reversible alternative to vasectomy, which involves tying or removing part of the vas deferens. It was tested in a phase I clinical trial involving 25 volunteers. The company shared the success of the first two participants who underwent the hydrogel procedure two years ago.
During this period, no traces of sperm were found in the volunteers' seminal fluid. Although men have not yet reached the point in time where the hydrogel breaks down on its own, animal studies have shown that it is eliminated from the body without complications or reduced fertility.
This makes the Adam contraceptive better than other similar devices, which are based on the introduction of non-degradable materials into the vas deferens, which can damage them and require removal later. The company is currently working to launch a second phase of trials on a larger number of people and to develop a method for early termination of contraception at the request of men.
