Major General Mykola Zhirnov: Ukrainian air defense shoots down up to 70% of Russian missiles

Major General Mykola Zhirnov, head of the Kyiv Military Academy — analysis of Russian air and missile strikes shows that 50 to 70% of enemy missiles are shot down by anti-aircraft defenses

The head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Major General Mykola Zhirnov, spoke about the situation in Kyiv, the efforts that the city's leadership is making to strengthen the defense and raise the morale of Ukrainians.

- On the occasion of Independence Day, a display of knocked down and burned enemy armored vehicles was arranged in Kyiv, which raised the spirit of Ukrainians. The defense forces ensured the safety of the mass visitors. Is it possible to conclude from this that the capital is reliably protected by anti-aircraft defense, that it will no longer be threatened by rocket attacks?

- As long as the enemy has missile and air weapons, there will still be a threat of air and missile strikes. It can be stated today that the enemy cannot use its air weapons with impunity, nor can it ensure the effectiveness of its missile strikes. This became possible thanks to the work of the air defense system, the heroism and professionalism of our servicemen.

An analysis of Russian air and missile strikes shows that from 50 to 70% of enemy missiles are shot down by air defense means, both by aircraft and by anti-aircraft missile units. But, unfortunately, today we cannot ensure 100% effectiveness of air defense operations, this is due to objective reasons - insufficient number of reconnaissance means, aviation and anti-aircraft missile systems. Basically, these are Soviet systems, which do not have the same efficiency and reliability as the air defense equipment of NATO partner countries.

- Can you share a secret: who had the idea of holding such an exhibition, what was the goal pursued by its organizers? Has it been achieved?

- In Russia, people always focused on some important dates in the life of the country and prepared certain events for these dates, in particular, parades, demonstrations, etc. Given that Putin planned to seize Kyiv and hold a parade in three days, the state leadership did him such a "favor". One cannot deprive the Russian dictator of such pleasure. Only the parade took place in a slightly different format...

The idea of organizing the exposition belongs to the President of Ukraine. For the Ukrainian people, it was a motivated event aimed at strengthening the confidence of the Ukrainian people, demonstrating to the citizens, our international partners and the entire world community the power of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people in general, the successes of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in repelling Russian armed aggression and countering informational propaganda of the Russian Federation.

The exposition consisted of about 80 units of armored light and heavy equipment of military formations of the Russian Federation.

- Was it possible to implement everything from the plan? Will there be similar promotions in the future?

- This campaign was not only carried out by us, several departments cooperated. It took place for the first time and achieved its goal. Many people, including foreigners, saw the "parade" dreamed of by Russians. Like any project, it can be improved. At this exhibition, it was possible to exhibit many more samples of weapons, for example, drones of the Orlan 10 type, broken aviation equipment. All types of Russian combat aircraft (except strategic aircraft) have suffered "shameful accidents" on Ukrainian soil. These include Su-35, Su-34, Su-30, Su-25, as well as helicopters - K-52, Mi-28, etc.

Of course, such actions must be held, because they raise the spirit of the Ukrainian people and the foreign community, as well as debunk the myth about the invincibility of the "second army of the world".

- What are the general duties of the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration? What functions would you prioritize?

- According to the current legislation, the city military administration is entrusted with the performance of clearly defined tasks: preparing the city for defense, ensuring public order and security of the civilian population, and implementing the measures of the legal regime of martial law.

I, as the head of the administration, must organize the execution of these tasks. They are quite voluminous and by their scope include various spheres of the city's activity, including the work of critical infrastructure, the placement of military units, assistance in their functioning and provision, possible evacuation of the population, provision of the city's residents with everything necessary for life, and much more.

- How would you characterize the current situation in the capital? Have enemy DRGs been detected and detained recently, have terrorist attacks been prevented, etc.? Due to the silence in the information space, one sometimes gets the impression that there is no war in the capital.

- What should remind of the war in the capital? A more or less calm situation is the painstaking work of the military, law enforcement officers, and workers of the city's critical infrastructure. They work around the clock - all for the safety of citizens and their comfortable living. During the war, it is not necessary to declare this in every case. The fact that we do not have terrorist attacks and the enemy's DRGs are not working is the merit of those people who prevent these actions. I would like to remind you that at the beginning of the large-scale aggression in Kyiv there were many of them, but thanks to the efforts of the defense forces, the DRG was eliminated in time. Due to the preventive actions of law enforcement officers, 408 DRG members were detained on the territory of Kyiv since the beginning of the Russian aggression! However, everyone needs to be vigilant, because we understand that some of them remain inactive.

- Where can residents of Kyiv get up-to-date information about regulatory policy in the area of the capital's security?

- The official source of information is the telegram channel of the Kyiv City Military Administration, in addition, certain decisions are published on the official website of the KMDA in the decisions section and the KMVA section.

- What would you wish our readers? Maybe they were warned about something, they were given some advice?

- First of all, I would like to wish that the residents of our city always remember those people who perform tasks on the front lines, that it is thanks to the defending soldier that they can live safely today. We ask everyone to be vigilant, obey the air raid signals, observe the curfew, follow the decisions made by the city defense council, support each other, especially the elderly who need help, keep prudence, patience and calmness. To believe in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Together we will win!
