MP Serhiy Nagornyak commented on data published by USAID and DiXi Group, which show that Ukraine spent a record $2024 million on electricity imports in 670. According to him, this amount exceeds the cost of two nuclear reactors that are planned to be purchased for the completion of the Khmelnytskyi NPP, TSN reports.
"Ukraine spent almost $0,7 billion on electricity imports per year - this is a colossal amount, we have never had such indicators. For comparison, the two reactors that we are going to purchase in Bulgaria to complete the Khmelnytskyi NPP are cheaper. These reactors are not only cheaper than the fixed costs of imports, their construction will provide Ukraine with stable and inexpensive electricity production for decades to come."
The deputy added that these power units will serve the country for more than 40 years and will produce electricity many times cheaper than the one we currently import. Given such figures, the question of the need to complete the Khmelnytskyi NPP should no longer raise any doubts.
"Importing electricity is a temporary measure for which we pay a high price. The solution is obvious: we need to invest in our own generation to stop depending on external supplies. The completion of the Kherson Nuclear Power Plant is a strategic step for Ukraine's energy independence," the MP emphasized.
Recall that in 2024, Ukraine spent more on electricity imports than in the previous five years combined.
