The administration of US President Joe Biden is developing new sanctions aimed at tightening restrictions on oil trade with Russia. These measures are intended to put pressure on the Russian military industry, especially given the possible return of Donald Trump to power.
According to reported the Bloomberg, the new sanctions are still under development, but among the discussed options are restrictions on certain types of Russian oil exports.
Previously, the Biden administration refrained from such actions, fearing the rise in energy prices, which could affect the political situation before the presidential elections in November. However, oil prices have recently fallen due to oversupply in the world market. In addition, there are fears that Trump, having returned to the White House, may push Ukraine to quickly conclude an agreement with Russia.
According to Bloomberg, the Biden administration is willing to take risks as it ends its term. Previous attempts to cut Russia's energy revenues have had mixed results, but now that U.S. gasoline prices have hit their lowest level since mid-2021, the situation favors decisive action.
Among the new initiatives are sanctions against the "shadow fleet" - tankers that Russia uses to transport oil. It is expected that these restrictions may be announced in the coming weeks.
In addition, the European Union is preparing to introduce similar sanctions by the end of the year. They will be aimed not only at ships, but also at individuals involved in the trade of Russian oil. The Biden administration also plans to increase support for Ukraine, particularly in the financial and military spheres, given the uncertainty about Trump's future policy on aid to Kyiv.
