The gas pipeline project from the Russian Federation to China was stopped

Mongolia did not include in its national development plan until 2028 the project of the "Power of Siberia - 2" gas pipeline, which the Russian Federation intended to lay through its territory to transport gas to China. This was reported by the newspaper The South China Morning Post.

Thus, the construction of the pipeline, the construction of which was promoted by Vladimir Putin at the meeting with the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, will not take place for at least the next few years.

"We are entering a long pause as Moscow no longer believes it can strike the desired deal with Beijing and will likely postpone the project until better times." - the publication quotes the words of Munkhnar Bayarlhavgi, a former member of the Security Council of Mongolia.

In turn, a Russian and Central Asian expert from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Li Lifan, said in a conversation with The South China Morning Post: "Mongolia hopes to get investment from China and Russia, but Russia has no money and China is in no rush to build the pipeline."

Earlier, The Financial Times reported that Russia's attempts to conclude an agreement with China on the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline have reached a dead end due to differences in pricing policy and the amount of gas that Beijing intends to purchase from Moscow.

As the interlocutors of the publication noted, China is ready to pay for gas supplied through "Power of Siberia - 2", a price close to domestic fuel prices to the Russian Federation, although they are kept at a given level thanks to state subsidies. In addition, Beijing wants to purchase only a small part of the amount of fuel that the pipeline's capacity is designed to supply.

After the European Union sharply reduced purchases of Russian gas due to the Russian Federation's full-scale war against Ukraine, Vladimir Putin proposed to Xi Jinping to increase gas supplies from the Russian Federation to 100 billion cubic meters per year. However, Beijing never approved the construction of a new gas pipeline.
