The European Union has set a condition for lifting sanctions against Russia - the withdrawal of all Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine. The decision to change the sanctions requires unanimity among all EU member states. This is reported by Reuters.
The withdrawal of all Russian military forces from the territory of Ukraine will be one of the main conditions for possible changes or lifting of European Union sanctions, a representative of the European Commission said.
Speaking on Wednesday, he stressed that the EU would extend two sanctions frameworks against Russia for another six months, reaffirming its position on Moscow's aggression against Ukraine.
"The end of Russia's unprovoked and unfounded aggression in Ukraine and the unconditional withdrawal of all Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine will be one of the key conditions for changing or lifting sanctions," — said the representative of the European Commission.
It should be noted that changing sanctions requires unanimity from all 27 EU member states. This makes lifting restrictions complicated, as each member has a veto.
Meanwhile, the United States has reached separate agreements with Ukraine and Russia to end attacks on sea and energy facilities. Washington has agreed to facilitate the lifting of some sanctions against Moscow in exchange for a maritime security agreement in the Black Sea.
In response, Russia said the United States had agreed to help lift a number of Western sanctions, including restrictions on food, fertilizers and shipping. Most of these restrictions relate to EU sanctions, diplomats told Reuters.
