Emmanuel Macron and EU leaders oppose easing sanctions against Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron has opposed the idea of lifting sanctions on Russian oil due to rising global energy prices. His position has been supported by other European leaders. This is reported by Le Figaro.

In connection with the rapid rise in oil prices, US President Donald Trump said on March 9 that he was considering lifting sanctions on Russian oil.

Commenting on this statement, Macron expressed the opposite position.

In his opinion, the situation on the energy market should not affect the sanctions policy towards Moscow.

"Blocking the Strait of Hormuz in no way justifies lifting sanctions against Russia," — said Macron.

In addition, the French leader organized a telephone conversation with G7 partners to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen thanked Macron for the initiative and called for a coordinated response.

Both leaders stated this in social networks H.

“We are focused on minimizing the impact on security and the global energy market,” — they noted.

Costa and von der Leyen stressed that ensuring stable energy flows and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which is key to the global economy, remains a priority.

EU leaders also stressed the need to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia.

"Ensuring compliance with the oil price ceiling will help stabilize markets and limit Russia's revenues. Now is not the time to ease sanctions against Russia," - says the message.
