Poland will block the admission to the EU market of food products from South America

Poland

On Sunday, November 24, Polish Minister of Agriculture Czesław Sekerski will meet with a group of farmers who are blocking the Medica-Szehyny checkpoint on the border with Ukraine. This is reported by RMF24.

Polish farmers voiced two reasons for the protest at the border with Ukraine. The first is the failure to comply with the requirement to maintain the level of the agricultural tax in 2024 at the level of 2023, and the second is "concerns" about the European Union signing a free trade agreement with the South American MERCOSUR countries (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay). None of them directly concern Ukraine.

Sekersky previously stated that his ministry opposes the agreement with MERCOSUR countries. He added that Poland, together with France, will block the admission to the EU market of food products that do not meet safety standards. The minister said that his department, together with the Ministry of Development and Technologies, is currently preparing a position on this issue, which should be adopted by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.

Roman Kondrov, one of the organizers of the blockade, says that negotiations with the minister can end the blockade if Sekersky has a specific proposal for farmers.

We will remind you that on Saturday, November 23, Polish farmers blocked the Medica - Shehyny checkpoint on the border with Ukraine.
